Margi Wallace Beams Her Way to the Top of the Gymnastics World by Shane Saunders |
|
This month, The Hudson Street Journal profiles another student from a wide scope of interest outside of school. The spotlight now shines on freshman Margi Wallace. Margi is involved in gymnastics, not an uncommon sport, but one scarcely reported on in school news. Margi's accomplishments are numerous and deserve much fanfare. Margi entered the realm of gymnastics eleven years ago when she took part in the Tulsa World of Gymnastics (a local program). Her mother wanted to find an activity to occupy Margi's "rambunctious" energy. Gymnastics was appealing for its aerobic and disciplinary qualities. Currently Margi is a level nine (on a scale of four -- ten, with ten being an Olympic competitor). Margi's coach is Kerry Crawley, who is still affiliated with Tulsa World of Gymnastics. The team under Coach Crawley numbers about ninety. Margi's greatest accomplishments were her performances at the past regional tournaments. Margi placed first as a Level 8 contender and second as a Level 9 contender. Margi competes in all four events; vault, uneven bars, beam, and floor exercise. Margi said her favorite event is the bars and that she excels most at that event. Margi is currently battling her way back from a stress fracture in her back and will hopefully be able to compete in some big upcoming events. The events include, the Atlanta Crown Invitational in January, the Phoenix Sweetheart Meet over Valentine's Day and a March date in Colorado Springs. The Kelley community can support Margi on February twenty-seventh and twenty-eight at the convention center when she participates in the coed Classic. Margi loves gymnastics and hopes that more people will get involved, she sees "gymnastics as a big part of (her) life and something everyone needs to see at least once." Margi definitely deserves congratulations and The Journal hopes that many members of the Kelley community will take the opportunity to see Margi in action. |
