Tulsa Hosting Top Gymnasts In Four-Day Training Camp By World's own Service 12/5/96 USA Gymnastics will bring 86 of the country's potential gold medal contenders to Tulsa for a four-day training camp beginning Thursday. The camp will be held at the Tulsa World of Gymnastics under the scrutiny of the national coaching staff including Olympic coach Mary Lee Tracy. Co-hosts for the '96 USA Gymnastics TOP (Talent Opportunity Program) National Training Camp are the Tulsa World of Gymnastics and the Tulsa Sports Commission. This is the third time the training camp has been awarded to Tulsa World of Gymnastics, located at 7020 E. 38th St. The field of gymnastics talent in the 9-11 age group includes three Tulsa-area athletes -- Erin Blackstock, Kristin Dill and Amber Griggs. Also scheduled to participate are Kim Zmeskal, 1991 World Gymnastics Champion and 1992 Olympic participant, and Amanda Borden, a member of the United States' gold medal-winning team at the Atlanta Olympics this summer. Zmeskal will arrive Friday to work with the youngsters, while Tracy and Borden will be here Saturday for the dinner at the Embassy Suites. Gary Warren, manager of the USAG National Elite Program, said this will be the best field of young gymnasts since the project began in 1990. |
